Owner's manual containing the information needed to understand and correctly operate Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140 sedans.
Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991 as the successor to the W126, the Mercedes-Benz W140 began a new era for the S-Class. It was developed with particular attention to comfort, safety, sound insulation and ride quality. The range included standard-wheelbase SE sedans and long-wheelbase SEL versions, which provided an additional 100 millimeters of rear passenger space.
This manual is an early edition for the series, with an editorial closing date of July 1992. It contains instructions covering the controls, engine starting, driving, comfort and safety systems, practical checks and technical data for the included models.
The explanations are supported by illustrations of the dashboard, climate control, seats, seat belts and airbags, transmission, locking system, engine compartment and other components. This makes each function easier to identify when the printed manual originally supplied with the vehicle is no longer available.
The document also includes an official table showing the model names adopted later: the 300 SE and 300 SEL became the S 320, the 400 SE and 400 SEL became the S 420, and the 500 SE and 500 SEL became the S 500.
The manual explains the operation of the manual and automatic transmissions, parking brake and cruise control. It also helps users interpret the indicators for oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level and the vehicle's main monitoring systems.
Information is provided on ABS, ASD, ASR, level control, adaptive damping and operation with snow chains. Some sections describe optional equipment, so the equipment fitted may differ according to the individual vehicle's specification.
This information is useful for owners, collectors and restorers who want to preserve the correct operating documentation for the vehicle. It does not replace the dismantling, diagnostic, repair or adjustment procedures found in a workshop manual.
The documentation provides model-specific data for the 300 SE, 300 SEL, 400 SE, 400 SEL, 500 SE and 500 SEL. It covers power output, displacement, performance, fuel consumption, dimensions, wheelbase, weights and load capacities.
It also includes filling capacities and information about engine oil, automatic transmission fluid, fuel, brake fluid, coolant and antifreeze.
The original Spanish section titles are retained below. Their contents are described in English so customers can understand what the manual covers and recognize the same sections inside the document.
