About the Mercedes-Benz SL R107

Introduced in 1971 as the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SL W113 “Pagoda,” the R107 began one of the longest production runs in the company’s history. Its design combined a two-seat roadster body with a folding soft top and removable hardtop, allowing the car to be adapted to different seasons and types of use.

The SL R107 evolved over more than eighteen years through changes to its engines, equipment, safety features and comfort systems. Depending on production period and market, the range included versions such as the 280 SL, 300 SL, 350 SL, 380 SL, 420 SL, 450 SL, 500 SL and 560 SL.

This extended production history created significant differences between early cars and later models. Identifying the correct version, destination market and production stage is therefore essential when consulting owner documentation or recognizing the vehicle’s original controls and components.
