About the Mercedes-Benz M-Class W163

Introduced in 1997, the Mercedes-Benz W163 established the M-Class by combining the characteristics of an off-road vehicle with the comfort and equipment of a passenger car. Primary production was based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, while additional vehicles were also assembled in Graz to meet international demand.

The first generation used a separate-frame structure and permanent all-wheel drive. Its electronic 4ETS system could brake individual wheels that lost grip, directing power to those retaining traction on both paved roads and low-grip surfaces.

The model revision introduced in 2001 brought changes to the design, interior, safety, climate systems and equipment, together with new engines. The range included petrol, CDI and AMG alternatives with different performance and installed systems, making it important to identify the exact production stage and version before selecting a manual.
