Original Edition A instruction manual covering the operation, driving and maintenance of the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster W121 B II.
The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL prototype was presented alongside the 300 SL at the 1954 International Motor Sports Show in New York. Conceived as an elegant two-seat grand tourer, it combined styling inspired by the 300 SL with a platform technically related to Mercedes-Benz 121 Series sedans. The production version appeared at the 1955 Geneva Motor Show and remained in production until 1963.
The model used a 1.9-liter four-cylinder M121 B II engine and a four-speed manual transmission. It was offered as a roadster with a folding top and could also be equipped with a removable hardtop. Its combination of design, comfort and accessible mechanical engineering made the 190 SL one of Mercedes-Benz's most recognizable classic convertibles.
This Instruction Manual explains how to operate the car and understand its main components. Unlike later owner's manuals, it devotes substantial space to mechanical procedures that could be performed by the owner, ranging from periodic lubrication to checks involving the ignition, carburetors, brakes and electrical system.
The manual includes a lubrication and maintenance schedule with initial and recurring operations. It explains engine-oil checks, oil changes and the cleaning of the oil, air and fuel filters, together with distributor lubrication and spark-plug inspection.
It also covers valve-clearance checks, the Solex carburetor system, clutch adjustment and chassis lubrication points. The instructions reflect the products and procedures available when the document was published and should therefore be interpreted in the technical context of the vehicle.
A dedicated section helps identify possible causes when the starter does not turn, the engine fails to start or the engine stalls while driving. It also covers checks involving the fuel supply, ignition, oil pressure, coolant temperature, battery charging, clutch and brakes.
These instructions are valuable as historical documentation and an owner's reference, but they do not replace professional diagnosis or the complete repair procedures contained in a workshop manual.
The document provides specifications for the M121 B II engine, including power output, displacement, compression ratio, firing order, carburetors, capacities and service products. It also covers the four-speed manual transmission, dimensions, wheelbase, weights, performance, fuel consumption and fuel-tank capacity.
The original manual is organized into the following main sections.
