About the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL R121

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was presented in 1954 alongside the 300 SL “Gullwing” and entered production in 1955. Conceived as an elegant and more accessible open sports car, it brought some of the 300 SL’s visual appeal to a roadster designed for touring and everyday use.

Its structure was derived from the Ponton family, although it used an adapted platform and a two-seat body with a folding soft top. Power came from a 1.9-litre four-cylinder petrol engine combined with a four-speed manual transmission. A removable hardtop was also available.

The model received changes to mechanical details, trim and equipment throughout its production without altering its essential concept. By the time production ended in 1963, 25,881 units had been built. Differences between editions and markets should be considered when consulting the vehicle’s original instructions.
