About the Mercedes-Benz L 3500 and O 3500

Introduced in 1949, the Mercedes-Benz L 3500 was one of the brand's first commercial vehicles developed after the Second World War. Its conventional design, with a front-mounted engine beneath a long bonnet, combined a payload capacity of approximately 3.5 tonnes with a durable diesel powertrain suited to many transport applications.

The O 3500 passenger vehicle was developed from the truck's technical platform and produced in city bus, interurban and touring-coach configurations. Both models used the OM 312 diesel engine and contributed to the re-establishment of Mercedes-Benz commercial-vehicle production at the Mannheim plant.

The family included platform trucks, tippers, all-wheel-drive vehicles, special-purpose models and buses with different bodies. In 1955, the brand's new designation system renamed the L 3500 and its variants as the L 311 series, making it important to check the model, body configuration and year before selecting documentation.
