About the Mercedes-Benz G-Class W460

Introduced in 1979, the Mercedes-Benz W460 was the first civilian version of the G-Class off-road vehicle. Developed jointly with Steyr-Daimler-Puch and manufactured in Graz, it combined a ladder frame, rigid axles and a body designed for durability and operation over difficult terrain.

The range included short- and long-wheelbase versions, enclosed and convertible bodies and different petrol and diesel engines. Its selectable four-wheel drive, transfer case and differential locks allowed the vehicle to be adapted to varying traction conditions and off-road use.

During its production life, the W460 received improvements to its interior, equipment and engine range while retaining a primarily functional character. It should be distinguished from the later W461, also intended for demanding work, and the W463, developed with a more luxurious and road-oriented specification.
