About the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class R129

Introduced in 1989 as the successor to the R107 SL, the Mercedes-Benz R129 established a new generation of roadsters in which design, comfort and passive safety played a central role. Its body combined aerodynamic lines with a reinforced structure and solutions developed specifically for open-top driving.

Its defining features included an electrohydraulic soft top, removable hardtop, integral seats and a roll bar capable of deploying automatically when a rollover was detected. The windscreen pillars and front roof frame were also reinforced to protect the passenger compartment.

The range evolved through six-, eight- and twelve-cylinder engines, different suspension systems and successive electronic additions. In 1993, the order of the commercial model names changed, turning designations such as 500 SL into SL 500. These variations make it important to identify the exact production stage before selecting a manual.
