About the Mercedes-Benz 180 W120 Ponton

Introduced in August 1953, the Mercedes-Benz 180 W120 was the company’s first passenger car with a Ponton-style body. Its integrated fenders and continuous body lines provided more interior space, lower aerodynamic drag and a more modern appearance than the preceding models.

The series was offered with petrol and diesel engines and evolved through successive versions of the 180 and 180 D, later identified by the letters a, b and c. In addition to saloons, Mercedes-Benz supplied chassis with partial bodies for ambulances, hearses, service vehicles and other specialist conversions.

Production of the 180 c and 180 Dc ended in 1962, completing nine years of development for the four-cylinder Ponton. Mechanical and styling changes introduced during this period make it important to identify the exact version before consulting instructions, capacities or operating data.
