About the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116

Introduced in 1972, the W116 was the first Mercedes-Benz series officially marketed under the S-Class name. It replaced the W108 and W109 saloons with a more modern design, a body developed around safety and a range of standard- and long-wheelbase versions.

The family included six- and eight-cylinder models such as the 280 S, 280 SE, 280 SEL, 350 SE, 350 SEL, 450 SE and 450 SEL. It also included the 300 SD turbodiesel for North America and the 450 SEL 6.9, equipped with the M100 engine and a model-specific hydropneumatic suspension.

The series introduced important advances in occupant protection, driving behaviour and vehicle control. In 1978, it became the first production car to offer the electronic anti-lock braking system jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and Bosch. These technical and equipment differences should be considered when selecting the appropriate documentation.
