About the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W115

Introduced in 1968 as part of Mercedes-Benz’s “New Generation” of mid-size cars, the W115 shared its development and styling with the W114. Both series became widely known as the “/8” or “Stroke Eight,” a reference to their year of introduction.

The W115 designation was used primarily for four-cylinder petrol and diesel versions, while six-cylinder models were initially assigned to the W114 series. The W115 range included designations such as the 200, 220, 230.4, 200 D, 220 D, 240 D and 240 D 3.0.

The series introduced a new semi-trailing-arm rear suspension and received a major model revision in 1973. It was also notable for the 240 D 3.0, fitted with the first five-cylinder diesel engine produced in series for a passenger car. Its variety of engines and applications makes it important to consult documentation appropriate to each configuration.
