About the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W109

The Mercedes-Benz W109 belonged to the company’s upper-range saloon family introduced during the 1960s. It was closely related to the W108 but distinguished by its long-wheelbase body, SEL designation and air suspension, a combination developed to provide greater comfort and stability.

The series began with the 300 SEL and evolved through six- and eight-cylinder versions, including the 300 SEL 3.5, 300 SEL 4.5 and 300 SEL 6.3. The latter combined the discreet body of a luxury saloon with the V8 engine and automatic transmission from the Mercedes-Benz 600, making it one of the most notable performance saloons of its generation.

The 300 SEL 4.5 was developed for the North American market and joined the range during its final production period. Differences in engines, equipment and market specifications make it particularly important to identify the exact version before consulting operating instructions or vehicle data.
