About the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126

The W126 S-Class was introduced in 1979 as the successor to the W116. Its development focused on improving comfort and safety while reducing fuel consumption through a more aerodynamic body, lighter materials and a new generation of engines.

The range included standard- and long-wheelbase saloons identified as SE and SEL, together with the C126 SEC coupés introduced in 1981. Turbodiesel versions were also offered primarily for the North American market, alongside a wide selection of six- and eight-cylinder petrol engines.

Throughout its long development, the 126 Series adopted increasingly advanced restraint and protection systems, including a driver airbag, seat-belt pretensioners and later a front-passenger airbag. The 1985 model revision changed engines, trim and equipment, making it important to distinguish between production stages when selecting a manual.
