About the Mercedes-Benz 170 W136

The Mercedes-Benz W136 played an important role in restarting Mercedes-Benz passenger car production after the Second World War. Based on the proven 170 V concept from the pre-war period, it allowed production to resume with saloons, light commercial bodies and vehicles adapted for specific service uses.

From 1949 the range expanded with diesel versions and more refined variants, including the 170 S and later derivatives. Because of its position in Mercedes-Benz’s medium-size saloon lineage, the W136 is commonly associated with the technical and historical predecessors of the later E-Class.
