About the Mercedes-Benz 180 W120 Ponton

The Mercedes-Benz W120 was a touring sedan produced between 1953 and 1962. Best known as the 180 model within the Ponton family, it was one of the first completely new Mercedes-Benz designs introduced after the Second World War.

The Ponton body concept brought a welded unitized structure with rounded lines, improved interior space, better visibility and reduced wind noise compared with earlier Mercedes-Benz passenger cars based on more traditional construction.

Early versions retained a four-cylinder engine derived from the Mercedes-Benz 170, while the range later included both gasoline and diesel variants. For that reason, W120 documentation is especially useful for owners, workshops and restorers working on 180 and 180 D sedans.
